My truck engine sounded loud in the quiet of the night and I wondered if Grace’s brother knew she and I had a date tonight. And if he did, did he speculate on what we’d done at Grace’s house? Multiple times? While working on the exterior at Kind Kanines, I’d registered how close Grace and her brother were and couldn’t help but want the guy’s approval or something. Grace already meant more to me than most people did and I wanted this thing between us to work.

Because three strikes and you were out, right?

Haley and I had fallen apart. Jena had checked out. If Grace decided I wasn’t what she wanted, I’d officially give up. I’d thought I’d already officially given up so to be pulled back into the relationship game was a shock to me. I’d like to see any guy resist Grace though.

Apparently her ex-fiancé had resisted. His head must have been filled with river rocks for him to choose his family’s money over someone as fantastic as Grace. How much she must have hurt after hearing the news of not being able to have kids. For her rich fiancé—someone who had promised he’d be there—to break off the engagement because of that could only mean he was a royal dick. She was better off without him.

Was she better off with me though? The fact that I didn’t want more kids and she couldn’t have them had to mean we were a good match. How many times did couples fight over differences of opinion on this topic? With us, we’d hashed it out—on our first date—and agreed. That had to mean something, didn’t it?

I tapped my hand on the steering wheel as I mulled over our date and neared my house. I was stoked to have another date planned for tomorrow. I hoped Kolton would be agreeable to it. I’d soften him up to the idea. Another big breakfast of his choosing to start the day. I’d broach the subject of kayaking, which he’d be into. Then I’d layer in the possibility of Grace coming, but make it seem as if it was his idea to invite her. If Kolton thought he was in control of a situation, he was far less likely to become anxious and blow up. If that conversation went well, maybe I’d follow up with some time working on the back porch together. He loved to help me build things. He considered it another form of art. By the time noon rolled around, Kolton would be primed for a good afternoon.

That was the theory anyway.
